The Proper Locative Case: Location and Topic

The Locative case specifies location ('in', 'on', 'at') or the topic of discussion ('about'). It is unique because it is always used with a preposition, such as в/у (in), на (on), or о/об (about).

  • Nouns:

    • Singular Masculine/Neuter: Ending / . (e.g., в дому - in a house, о мужи - about a man, в селї - in a village, на поли - in a field)
    • Singular Feminine: Common ending is / . (e.g., на рїцї - on a river, о сестрі - about a sister, в землї - in the earth)
    • Plural (all genders): Ending -ах / -ах. (e.g., в домах - in houses, о мужах - about men, в селах - in villages, на рїках - on rivers)
  • Adjectives:

    • Singular Masculine/Neuter: hard -ом / -ім, soft -ім / -ім. (e.g., в добром дому - in a good house, о синьім морю - about the blue sea)
    • Singular Feminine: hard -ой / -ій, soft -їй / -їй. (e.g., на добрій рїцї - on a good river, о синьїй землї - about the blue earth)
    • Plural (all genders): hard -ых / -ых, soft -их / -ых. (e.g., в добрых домах - in good houses, о синьих мужах - about blue men)
  • Examples: Моя книга є на столї (My book is on the table). Говориме о нашім домї (We are talking about our house). Они живут у великўм городї (They live in a big city). Дїти ся грают на дворах (Children are playing in the yards).
