The Future Tense

To express actions that will happen in the future using imperfective verbs, you typically form it by combining a future form of the verb быть ('to be') with the infinitive (the base form, ending in -ть) of the main verb. Alternatively, for many perfective verbs, you use a simple future tense form (one word).

  • Compound Future ('Буть' + Infinitive - for imperfective verbs): буду, будешь, будет, будем, будете, будут + Infinitive
  • Simple Future (for perfective verbs): Formed by adding prefixes or suffixes to the present tense stem of the perfective verb.
  • Examples (Compound Future - imperfective): Я бу́ду чита́ть кни́гу (I will read a book). Ты бу́дешь говори́ть с ним (You will talk with him). Она́ бу́дет рабо́тать за́втра (She will work tomorrow). Мы бу́дем писа́ть (We will write). Они́ бу́дут смотре́ть фильм (They will watch a film).
  • Examples (Simple Future - perfective): Я прочита́ю кни́гу (I will read a book). Ты ска́жешь ему́ (You will tell him). Она́ сде́лает это (She will do it).
